The problem is that the installer is in some way incompatible with Service Pack 2 of Windows XP (Home AND Pro). Unfortunately JoWooD is not going to do a patch for the installer, but there is an acceptable solution to the problem.
By acceptable I do not mean to uninstall SP2, install the game, and reinstall SP2, but you can do it if you have too much time to lose (and I don't think it's healthy for Windows to do that ).

The solution I found (needs approximately 3,5GB HDD space):

1. Download a little program called e_wise, it's free software, and it can unpack files from WISE installers (there is another program that does the same under the name of exwise, but it cannot handle the installer's version)
2. Start a command-line shell (Start -> Run -> type "cmd")
3. You must have access to the installer executable on disc 1 and the file an2_french.w02 (in case of French version) on disc 2 SIMULTANEOUSLY !!!! So copy one of the two on your HDD and have the other in the CD-drive. Both are located in the folder named "install" on the discs.
4. Type in the command-line shell :

copy /b PATH_TO_FILE\an2_French.exe + PATH_TO_FILE\an2_french.w02

This will create another an2_french.exe in the current directory in the shell box, which will be the two files joined in one.
5. Then type in the directory where e_wise is :

e_wise_w PATH_TO_FILE\an2_french.exe PATH_WHERE_YOU_WANT_THE_FILES

This will extract to the specified directory all files of Aquanox 2 : Revelation under other names (takes some time, so have a drink while waiting ). Now run the 00000000.BAT file that is in the directory where the files have been extracted. You get a MAINDIR directory here in which the files will be as if they had been installed by the installer.
6. Run AN2Setup.exe, then Aquanox 2 Revelation.exe
7. Have fun.

This method worked perfectly for me and now I play the game without problems. This method is actually a "manual installation". I hope I helped.
